Product Description

Fully Insulated Taper Mouth Shovel BS8020

This BS8020 insulated taper mouth insulated shovel is built for safe digging near live buried cables. It is individually certified, numbered, and flash tested to 10,000 volts before leaving the factory. Utilities contractors, DNO workers, and groundworkers rely on it for live cable working every day. It meets the full requirements of the BS8020 standard for insulated hand tools.

Double-Layer Insulation System

The shovel uses a twin-layer polymer sheathing system over a rigid fibreglass core. The outer layer is high-visibility orange, chosen for its high voltage and abrasion resistance. Beneath it sits a white inner sleeve as a critical safety indicator. If the orange layer wears through and white becomes visible, remove the tool from live working immediately. This two-tone warning system gives workers a clear, reliable sign of reduced protection.

Taper Mouth Blade

The taper mouth design cuts cleanly into firm ground and compacted material. It is ideal for trench digging, backfilling, concrete mixing, and working tarmac or cement. The narrowing leading edge reduces resistance, making it easier to penetrate hard surfaces. A specially contoured collar above the blade prevents the hand slipping onto the steel. This is a critical safety feature when working near live conductors.

Fibreglass Core Handle

The handle is built around a rigid fibreglass core, not wood or hollow plastic. Fibreglass does not conduct electricity and resists moisture, flexing, and snapping under load. The polymer sheathing adds a further layer of grip and insulation for site conditions.

Full BS8020 Certification

Every single shovel is flash tested to 10,000 volts before dispatch. Each tool is printed with the BS8020 1000V logo and carries a unique serial number. This ensures full traceability and compliance with live cable working specifications. No two tools share the same number, making auditing and site records straightforward.

What Does BS8020 Mean?

  • BS8020 is the British Standard for insulated hand tools used near live conductors
  • Tools must withstand a flash test of 10,000 volts before receiving certification
  • The working voltage rating is 1,000 volts AC
  • Each tool must be individually numbered and traceable to its test certificate

Ideal For

    • Utilities and DNO groundwork teams
    • Highway and road maintenance crews
    • Trench digging near buried live cables
    • Backfilling and reinstatement work
    • Any live cable environment requiring BS8020 compliance
